“I guess I’m starting to like cake,” Satoshi mumbled to no one in particular as he eyed the slice of cake in front of him. It was his third slice already that night, and Kazunari was already teasing him about getting diabetes before the night even ends.

“What’s not to like?” his head shot up, looking straight at the man sat opposite from him on the table. What was his name again? He didn’t quite catch his name when his friend Sho introduced the two of them to each other, since he was immediately pulled to the side by an already tipsy Kazunari.

Satoshi simply smiled before going back to his dessert.

——

"Oh, you can have the last slice," Satoshi said, pulling his fork away from the cake. He was about to leave when the person called out for him.

"We can split it,"

They both stared at each other for a few seconds before the other male sliced the cake in half and placed it on Satoshi's plate. He thanked him and smiled. The man returned it.

——

"I can tell that you've really fallen for cakes," said someone behind him. His fork hovered in mid-air as he was about to take another bite of the dessert; he placed it down just as the person sat down opposite from him. It was the same person, two parties ago.

"What's not to like?" he smiled at him, and then continued eating.

"Absolutely nothing," the man grinned. They both sat there in silence as they ate their cakes, and as Satoshi finished, he stole a glance at the other. He cleared his throat which got his attention.

"I didn't catch your name," he began, "Sorry."

The other looked surprised for a moment, but smiled before replying: "Aiba Masaki."

"Ohno Satoshi,"

"I know," Masaki's smile widened. "Ohno-san, Sho-chan and Kazu's co-worker, right?"

"Right."

"Wanna go for another slice of cake?"

"I'd like that."

——

Satoshi watched Masaki as he made his way to the food table, leaving him at the couch with Kazunari. The younger male was talking about some game he just bought.

"Marry me, Satoshi,"

"What?"

"You weren't listening!" Kazunari let out an exasperated sigh. "You're just gawking at Masaki!"

"He's getting us cakes," he merely shrugged while Kazunari stared at him with a judging look. Masaki came back moments later, wearing an apologetic smile.

"I gave the last slice to Jun,"

"Oh..."

"It's my birthday after all," said the birthday boy, standing behind the couch he and Kazunari sat at while eating the last piece of cake. His gaze then landed on Masaki and then to Satoshi before smirking.

"We can eat some later at the cafe down the block, if you don't have any more plans?"

Sho approached the small crowd around the living room couch, asking what was going on, only for Kazunari to start rambling on about his new game to him and Jun. Surprisingly, Jun went along with it.

He didn't realize until a minute later that Masaki was standing there in front of him, waiting for an answer. His face broke into a smile before nodding.

But the thing is, he already ate a slice of cake before Masaki even made it to the party. He didn't mind eating another slice and drinking a cup of coffee with the man later on, though.

In fact, he even asked Masaki if he was free next weekend.

——

"Kazunari teases me a lot when it comes to sweets," Satoshi said. He and Masaki were at their usual hangout place just fifteen minutes from the man's workplaces, eating their usual slices of cake. It still surprises him how they both like the same flavor.

And he tries his best to hide how happy he is to know that.

"How come?"

"He said I might get diabetes."

Masaki giggled, "You don't have to worry about it, you know? Unless you eat sweets every single day."

"I don't," he smiled. "I guess I only eat sweets nowadays when we go out."

"We're like partners when it comes to eating sweets, yeah?"

Satoshi slightly pursed his lips, looking down at his half-eaten piece of cake, and then nodding.

"It's nice to hang out with you, Ohno-san," Masaki said. Satoshi could sense him lean forward, and it took him by surprise when the other wiped away something from the corner of his lips with a table napkin.

"Sorry, there was some frosting on your face," the other male shyly smiled at him once he sat back down on his seat.

"No, it's okay," he responded, grabbing a table napkin as well and then leaning against the table to do the same. "You've got some too."

He can't help but grin at a laughing Masaki. And he can't help but also notice the slide shade of red on the man's cheek before he plopped back down on his chair.

——

"Happy birthday, Oh-chan!" the way his name rolled out of Masaki's lips made him smile as he entered his house. Though the other wasn't the only one there; a bunch of his friends were too. Out of all the people who have greeted him when he entered, he, for some reason, focused on his "cake buddy's" voice especially.

The night was amazing, with the way Jun and Sho planned the party. Kazunari and Masaki were in charge of the food and drinks, and he made sure that he showed his gratitude for his dear friends' efforts.

"Time for Ohno-kun's favorite part of the party," Kazunaru called out for everyone to gather around the coffee table. Jun along with Sho and a few other friends stood behind him while Masaki held the birthday cake. "The cake."

A few people chuckled along with him. He looked up at Masaki who was smiling widely at him. Sho stepped forward to light up the candles.

"Man, you're getting old," Kazunari muttered, staring at the two candles that took form of the numbers 3 and 6.

"Shut up," Satoshi laughed, also staring at the two numbers. He took a deep breath, thinking of a wish, but before he blew the candles, he met gazes with Masaki again. The next thing he knew was that everyone was cheering and congratulating him.

"You're not going to slam my face into that, are you?" he asked as Jun removed the candles from the cake.

"Well..." Kazunari trailed off.

"Hey, I paid good money for this! It's our favorite flavor!" Masaki stepped away from the shorter male, causing people to laugh.

"Now where's the fun in that?" Jun smirked before getting some of the icing on his index finger and wiping it on Satoshi's cheek. Kazunari applauded before doing the same, causing a few other people to follow and for the room to be filled with much more laughter.

——

"Why aren't you inside?" Satoshi asked Masaki as he stepped out into the veranda. The man smiled at him saying that he felt tipsy, Kazunari made him drink a lot more than he expected the man to force him to.

He returned the smile then glanced back inside, seeing the other guests engrossed in a drinking game. He then stood beside the taller male, looking up at the night sky.

Masaki cleared his throat, "Oh-chan,"

"Mhm?"

"Happy birthday,"

"You already greeted me, silly," he chuckled, gently punching the other on the shoulder. Masaki giggled, and Satoshi could feel his eyes on him, but resisted the urge to look back.

He failed at the end though.

"Uh, you still have some icing..." Masaki pointed to his own right cheek, only for Satoshi to wipe his left cheek. It made Masaki smile. "I'll get it,"

And just like in the dramas Satoshi's sister would tell him about, that cheesy "you-have-something-on-your-face" gesture, they both ended up kissing. The both of them initiated it, and he can tell that it also surprised Masaki.

They pulled away after who-knows-how-long, and smiled.

"Oh-chan... you still have—"

"I know. Looks like it got some on you, too," Satoshi grinned, wiping off some icing from Masaki's left cheek.

——

"You two seriously just bond over cakes?" Kazunari gave him a judging look before turning his attention back to his game, playing on Satoshi's TV. "And you actually like him?"

"That sounds a bit harsh, don't you think?"

"Masaki's my best friend, and he's awesome, but do you really just like him because of cakes?"

"No!" Satoshi shook his head, and then eyed his cup of coffee atop of the coffee table. "I guess I just use cakes as an excuse to see him... to be with him."

Kazunari scrunched up his face. "How cheesy,"

"Shut up,"

"When are you two meeting up again?"

"I don't know..." he trailed off. "Maybe when I get back from my fishing trip this weekend?"

"Why don't you bring him with you?"

"I don't know if he even likes fishing!" a sigh left his lips. "Does he, though?"

His friend simply shrugged.

——

He checked one last time to see if he packed everything he needs for his fishing trip before zipping his bag. But just as he was about to leave his house, his phone started ringing. His heart jumped when he saw the caller ID, then immediately answered.

"Aiba-san?"

"Oh-chan!" Masaki's voice rang. "What's up?"

"Nothing," he replied, his fishing trip suddenly forgotten. "What are you up to?"

"Well I was walking from work and saw our cafe... Are you free?" It took him a second to recover from how Masaki had called cafe Doux their cafe.

"I'm free. I'll see you in a few, then?" They both exchanged a few more words before hanging up; he immediately threw his fishing bag over his couch, changed into more casual clothing, and then went out to meet Masaki.

A big smile spreaded across his face once he saw Masaki. They both waved at each other through the window before Satoshi entered the establishment. Halfway through their slices of cake, his phone suddenly rang, so he excused himself to take it. Turns out it was the boat rental shop, reminding him that the boat was ready any time that day. Glancing back at Masaki, who was looking out of the window; he told the shop lady that he might make it later that day, and if not, he'd just inform her. It was already paid for anyway.

"Sorry about that, it was about the boat I rented," he smiled apologetically, sitting back down on his chair. Masaki looked confused, and then asked about the boat.

"Ah, it was for a fishing trip..."

"Fishing trip? Do you mean for today?"

Satoshi nodded.

"But I thought you were free... you could have told me. It's alright, really!" Masaki said, pursing his lips afterwards. Satoshi found it cute.

"I can go later, you know?" Satoshi smiled reassuringly. "Besides, I'd much rather eat cake with you than hang out in the middle of the ocean,"

Masaki was silent as he stared down at his now empty plate. Satoshi heard him mumble an apology, to which he shook his head, leaned against the table to ruffle the other's hair. And when they meet gazes, he had to stop himself from kissing him. They were in a public place after all.

"Ohno-san," Masaki began, "If it's alright... can I go fishing with you later?"

"...You like fishing?"

"I do! Well... I haven't really gone fishing these days, but I've learned tons about it," he answered, smiling widely. "I mean, if it's alright with you."

Satoshi returned the smile, "Of course it's alright."

——

"Aiba-san, are you free today?"

"I am! Up for some cake again, Oh-chan?"

"That. And I have something to tell you, too,"

"Is everything alright?" Masaki was starting to sound nervous. A small smile appeared on Satoshi's face, answering that everything was fine, and that he should come by his house.

The moment they hung up, he frantically went around his house to make sure that everything was perfect, though all he got was a simple cake.

Masaki was there half an hour later, and Satoshi asked him to stay put at the living room before scurying off to the kitchen to fetch the cake; returning moments later to a still confused Masaki. But the moment the latter saw the box of cake he was carrying, his face broke into a smile.

"Cake."

"Cake, yeah," Satoshi took a deep breath before opening the box and showing it to the other. The room was silent for what felt like hours, causing his heart to beat faster than ever and his mind to come up with the worst case scenarios.

"Oh-chan..."

"Yes?"

Masaki took the heart-shaped cake from his hands, placed it down on the coffee table, and then pressed their lips together into a kiss. He placed his hand on the back of Masaki's neck to deepen it. The two of them pulled away moments later, a bit breathless by then.

"So does that mean you feel the same way?"

The taller male's laughter filled the room. He nodded, and then gently pinched Satoshi's cheek, smiling widely before saying, "Isn't it obvious? Falling for you is a piece of cake, you know?"

"Was that a pun?" the both of them laughed.

"Uh-huh. You better kiss me again or else I might just make even mo—"

And so Satoshi did. And the second kiss was even better than the first one.
