It has been twenty minutes since he noticed the man standing in front of that one particular painting. Satoshi wonders what the man even sees in that, since he only made it last minute for his exhibition.
He wasn't even sure if the man has been there longer or not.
Perhaps he's also an artist, he thinks to himself; he hesitates for a moment, but approaches the man, standing beside him and looking at his work. Unlike his other paintings that took so much time to create---to perfect, he can't help but find that one to be ordinary.
"Are you also an artist?" Satoshi asks, but kept his gaze at his painting. He has always been bad in talking with new people, especially at such events like the opening of a new exhibition. The man turned his head to look at him, and Satoshi can tell from his peripheral vision that he smiled.
"I can't draw to save my life,"
"Oh," he says, suddenly feeling confused again. "What do you think of this painting, then?"
"I don't know much about art, but I like this one," the man answers.
"And the other paintings?"
"They're nice too, of course. The artist of this exhibition sure has talent," he says, "But for some reason, I like this one the most."
Satoshi stands quiet for a few seconds, eyebrows now furrowed as he stared at his painting. To him, it was merely red and blue on a canvas. "Doesn't it seem rushed?"
"It does, I thought I was the only one who noticed! Even so, it's still impressive... like a puzzle piece to complete this exhibit,"
A puzzle piece.
"Are you familiar with the artist? No one has ever seen Reiji before, as I've heard from a few girls back there," Satoshi takes a step back, then finally looks at the stranger, thinking for a second whether he should reveal his identity or not. They both stared at each other before Satoshi averted his gaze.
"Yeah," he says, giving the man a knowing look two seconds later to add: "Thanks for coming,"
An amused smile appears on his face, seeing the man's surprised expression. He steps closer to him, whispering an introduction---using his real name. The other introduces himself as well. Sakurai Sho also known as the "man who can't draw to save his own life"
Satoshi invites him for a cup of coffee at a nearby Starbucks after hours of talking and looking at his other paintings (He even got the man to draw Winnie the Pooh on his small schedule notebook. He finds it adorable) thankfully Sho accepted his invite---gave a reply almost immediately, to Satoshi's surprise.
And as they make their way out of the exhibit, Satoshi takes one last look at his last minute painting, the red and blue paint on a canvas, the puzzle piece to complete his exhibition, and thinks to himself: Perhaps that painting isn't so bad after all.
