Summary: Whenever the sun rises and sets, that's where Jun is, admiring it in the best way he can.
Aiba Masaki is always called as "the sun" by everyone; by the way he can light up a room so quickly by merely entering it, how he can cheer people up with his foolishness, how he can, despite everyone being tired already, make a room laugh just by cracking even the lamest joke he can come up with.
And his smile.
But even the sun has to set, and that's where Jun comes in.
It started when they were at a barbeque party at their friend Ohno Satoshi's place. Everyone's still at the veranda while Jun was inside, reading a new book of his. He was too engrossed in the chapter he's at, that he didn't notice Masaki enter the house.
"Why aren't you outside?" Masaki asked. Jun looked away from his book when he heard a sort of crack on the man's voice. But that was probably just him.
He held up his book as an answer and the other nodded slowly before sitting down beside him; he went back to reading, that is, until Masaki rest his head on his lap.
"Are you alright?" he asked, glancing from his book to his friend's head. Masaki nodded, but the way he was breathing said otherwise. It made Jun worry—afraid that his lungs might be acting up again.
"I'm just tired," is all Masaki said. Jun adjusted his glasses on the bridge of his nose and, though he was hesitating at first, moved his hand to his friend's hair, caressing it for just a few moments before pulling his hand back, feeling rather shy for what he had done.
"Thanks,"
"Just rest, Masaki." Jun said before going back to reading. And he did, only sitting up when they both sensed that everyone was going inside.
That's when Jun knew—realized finally—why Masaki was acting like that. Sakurai Sho was holding hands with no other than the host of the said party as they came in. He glanced at his hand when he felt Masaki's on top of it, then met gazes with him. The latter was smiling again, and he wanted to say, though he knew how messed up the thought was, that he shouldn't smile. He has already set that day. But he didn't.
"Jun," Masaki called out to him one afternoon. He was, again, reading a book. But this time they were at Masaki's place. Everyone was inside playing a game of cards, while they were outside. Jun asked what he was doing there, but soon understood when he saw the look on Masaki's face.
"I'm just tired," his friend said with a small smile. Jun stared, he can't help but. It was the sunset and despite it being beautiful, it's sad. He moved his book away from his lap then patted on it, and in just two seconds Masaki has his head rested on top of it while his hand was on his knee. They both stared at the view in front of them in silence. Jun's book completely ignored. And absentmindedly, he moved his hand to his friend's hair, gently caressing it as he listens to his heavy breathing.
And when they both went back inside, and Masaki was grinning again, Jun can't help but stare at Masaki and think of the sun, that has already set, try its best to rise again.
But that's just him and his stupid poetic-literature-crap.
Masaki didn't come to him after that. And Jun observed and came to the conclusion that he's finally okay. But in the back of his mind, he felt sad about it. Felt selfish for wanting his friend to set again, despite how beautiful he looks like when shining.
It scared him when he got his wish, two months later.
"You okay?" Jun asked, letting Masaki in his apartment. It was half past 5 AM and his friend messaged him if it's okay if he dropped by. Of course he said that it was, though he had only slept for 30 minutes.
"I am," Masaki replied, smiling.
They both sat down on the couch, and when Masaki rested his head on Jun's lap, he felt worried that the sun was only rising, yet Masaki was already setting.
"Is it about Sho again?" he asked for the first time. Masaki tensed up a bit, then started giggling.
"The first time I came to you, yeah," his friend answered. "But the second time and now, I just missed you so I looked for you, Jun.
"You know... you're like... the moon," said Masaki.
"What?"
"You seem cold and gloomy, but when I'm with you, I feel very comfortable and happy." And for the first time, Masaki turned so they can look at each other. "Do you feel the same?"
"I do. Of course." Jun smiled. "That's some metaphor you got there, Masaki."
"I thought you'd like it. You seem to read, a lot." Masaki grinned, and Jun, as if by habit, watched him for a few seconds, thinking to himself how beautiful the sunrise was. Whether he sees it from outside or just there, inside his apartment.

I always ship Sakuraiba. But recently, I just love the vibe between Junba and this fic picture their relationship really well.
It's typical of Jun- to be silently consoling, just by being there and understanding without really knowing what is actually happening.
And it's typical of Masaki as well- to be reserved, so keen in keeping his sunshine persona by trying to swallow everything in to himself.
Sho's appearance as the heart-breaker (albeit unknowingly, I notice) is placed just right. His presence is neither overwhelming nor meaningless. (And yeay for hinted Yama)
I just sooooo love this and the way you let the story flow.
